Nation’s Leading Blood Center Uses Best in NetFlow Analysis Solution to Speed Problem Resolution, Prevent Network Downtime for Critical Blood Establishment Computer System
Atlanta, July 12, 2010 – Lancope, Inc., the leader in NetFlowTM collection and analysis and the provider of the StealthWatch® System for flow-based network performance and security monitoring, today announced that Puget Sound Blood Center (PSBC) relies on StealthWatch for improved visibility across fixed and mobile networks supporting critical blood delivery and saving thousands of lives.
PSBC is an independent, community-based blood center in Wash. that is internationally recognized as a leader in transfusion medicine. The blood center operates the world's largest transfusion service, serves patients in more than 70 hospitals and clinics in 14 counties, and provides tissue and transplant support to 185 hospitals across the Northwest. With more than 1,200 devices connected to a network serving fixed and mobile donor centers, PSBC demands a high level of network visibility to ensure that its Blood Establishment Computer System is available 24x7x365 to support patients.
“Before StealthWatch, our IT team was frustrated by lengthy problem resolution, a lack of audit trails and the inability to monitor user activity for HIPAA compliance,” said Peggy Dunn, IT director for PSBC. “Identifying and solving network problems quickly is critical to our patient care. Moreover, StealthWatch has also benefited PSBC in other ways—from increased user accountability to improved cross team collaboration between helpdesk, network services and developers. We even use StealthWatch to train new IT employees.”
PSBC has deployed StealthWatch Xe for NetFlow™ and sFlow®, the StealthWatch IDentity appliance and the StealthWatch Management Console (SMC). By leveraging flow telemetry from routers and switches, StealthWatch delivers a high level of visibility and behavior-based protection in a cost-effective, scalable manner. StealthWatch’s proven NetFlow and sFlow analysis also provides PSBC with detailed insight into network traffic patterns, link utilization and performance. Lancope's StealthWatch IDentity appliance links individual users and specific network events. PSBC administrators simply request the username(s) and IP address associated with an event from the SMC, and the system returns the appropriate information in real-time. StealthWatch enables PSBC to monitor network traffic in real time and instantly drill down to any segment, device, application, host or user.
According to Dunn, “Our team relies on StealthWatch to quickly identify a problem, distinguish between network and application cause and notify the right resource for expedient resolution. The powerful NetFlow analysis enables us to verify a network connection centrally without traveling to remote sites, without hooking up to switch ports and without following the cables. And because StealthWatch provides historical context of IP activity, we have the audit trails needed to definitively resolve even the most sporadic network issues.”
“In StealthWatch, we have an efficient, convenient tool to monitor and enforce our acceptable use policy,” said Dunn. “While this obviously helps us comply with HIPAA mandates, in the larger context, we are creating better network citizens by educating people about how their behavior affects critical applications.”
“The Puget Sound Blood Center truly delivers a life-saving service, and as a result, it requires vigilant network visibility and incident response,” said Mike Potts, president and CEO of Lancope. “Properly analyzed NetFlow from StealthWatch is helping IT teams like PSBC keep a watchful eye on user activity, changing conditions, host behaviors and more. This enhanced visibility can help you regain control of the network and improve performance.”
StealthWatch has delivered tangible business benefits to PSBC, including cost savings from reduced network downtime and documented increases in IT employee productivity. “As opposed to constantly trouble-shooting and network monitoring, our high-level IT resources are now able to focus on strategic projects that will enhance patient care and support growth,” said Dunn. “This is the goal of every IT department and StealthWatch is helping us achieve it.”

StealthWatch Scales to Monitor Large Traffic Volumes and Speeds Incident Resolution across Data Center Networks
Atlanta, June 21, 2010 - Lancope, Inc., the leader in NetFlowTM collection and analysis and the provider of the StealthWatch® System for flow-based network performance and security monitoring, today announced that Telenor Norway, the leading telecom provider in Norway, is using StealthWatch for flow-based security monitoring and incident response across hundreds of network segments and services.
Telenor Norway provides Internet access and services, mobile services, telephony and other fixed services. Telenor Norway is the leading telecom operator in Norway, with a history of more than 150 years. Telenor's service portfolio includes fixed and mobile telephony, broadband and datacom services for residential and business customers, as well as a broad range of wholesale services. StealthWatch monitors traffic for all major data centers related to Telenor Norway's mobile and ISP services, encompassing thousands of UNIX and Windows servers connected to approximately 30 large Cisco access switches.
"Our network sustains more than a million packets per second in traffic," said Henrik Strom, head of IT security for operations in Telenor Norway. "Any IDS solutions would be challenged to inspect all that traffic, much less alert us to potential risks. During our extensive evaluation of security monitoring products, StealthWatch was found to be the only solution that can scale to our needs in terms of network traffic and administration."
Telenor Norway's Security Operations Center is currently the primary user of StealthWatch, with plans to expand usage to network, server and application operations teams. With StealthWatch in place, Telenor Norway's security teams receive greater visibility into data center networks, which they use for incident prevention, response and root cause analysis.
"StealthWatch goes beyond catching worms and denial-of-service attacks to provide a great deal of information about our network," said Strom. "We can see which services are being used and exposed to the Internet, how servers and services communicate, how workstations access production environments and more. The expanded knowledge StealthWatch affords helps our security team focus more on prevention than detection."
StealthWatch pioneered flow-based collection and analysis to unify network performance and security monitoring for end-to-end visibility across physical and virtual networks. Unlike traditional monitoring technologies that require extensive deployments, StealthWatch's award-winning flow-based approach leverages NetFlow to deliver cost-effective network visibility, improve security and optimize network performance. StealthWatch enables security and network operations teams to remediate incidents within seconds, reducing the overall costs of managing and protecting networks.
"StealthWatch enables us to proactively identify issues in our data centers that would otherwise have required tremendous effort to uncover," said Strom. "It indicates which services are being attacked, then we evaluate whether these services require patching, re-configuration or other actions. During services outages, StealthWatch helps determine the root cause of the problem and whether it is a security incident or not. We are very pleased with its rich functionality compared with other products we reviewed, including robust security features, IP-to-country mapping, ad hoc graphing of service traffic, VMware support, extensive documentation and the intuitive Graphical User Interface."
"Lancope is the leader in NetFlow collection and analysis for enterprise-class network performance and security management. Innovative organizations like Telenor Norway recognize Lancope's market leadership of flow-based solutions for total network visibility," said Mike Potts, president and CEO of Lancope. "StealthWatch delivers unmatched scalability, best-in-class problem resolution work flow and the industry's only unified platform for managing network, security and virtual operations."

~StealthWatch FlowSensor AE 3000 Provides Cost-effective Visibility and Performance Monitoring for 10 Gigabit Networks~
Atlanta, June 7, 2010 - Lancope, Inc., the leader in NetFlowTM collection and analysis and the provider of the StealthWatch® System, today announced the StealthWatch FlowSensor AE 3000 appliance, a new addition to the StealthWatch product family, that generates NetFlow data and packet-level metrics for cost-effective network visibility across 10 gigabit (10G) environments. With the new appliance, Lancope combines packet level statistics with NetFlow collection and analysis to provide affordable network performance and security monitoring of 10G networks.
The StealthWatch FlowSensor AE 3000 extends StealthWatch visibility into 10G networks that lack flow data, or where traditional Ethernet sensor technology is cost prohibitive. The StealthWatch FlowSensor AE 3000 translates Ethernet communications into lightweight "flow records" which are sent to StealthWatch Flow Collectors for detailed analysis. By delivering flow-by-flow visibility for 10 gigabit networks, StealthWatch provides continuous, scalable network visibility across the enterprise and down to individual flows at a fraction of the cost of traditional probe-based solutions, which charge based on total line rate rather than actual capacity used.
The lightweight StealthWatch FlowSensor AE 3000 connects to the 10G Ethernet through a switch port analyzer (SPAN), mirror port, or Ethernet test access port (TAP), and creates customized NetFlow v9 records with packet-level statistics from the traffic it observes. These flow records are sent to StealthWatch Flow Collectors for further analysis, including round-trip time (RTT), server response time (SRT), other TCP metrics and packet payload. Using StealthWatch's unique drill-down features, operators can identify root cause within seconds, easily determining whether a problem exists in the network, with a server or at a user's desktops.
Minimizing the need for expensive probe-based solutions and personnel, StealthWatch helps organizations optimize enterprise performance and security, while reducing overall network and security management costs. Leveraging NetFlow, sFlow, and packet-level metrics, StealthWatch provides an end-to-end enterprise monitoring and security solution for 10G networks from a single, integrated platform.
"10G Ethernet offers a tremendous boost in performance and capacity but also introduces several monitoring challenges. Traditional packet-based probes are much more expensive for 10G, and may not be the most cost-effective option due to the fact that most 10G links are still significantly underutilized," said Jim Frey, research director for Enterprise Management Associates. "Lancope's unique approach combines packet-level statistics with NetFlow collection and analysis to provide an affordable means of gathering essential performance and security metrics for 10G networks."
"The newest StealthWatch FlowSensor AE appliance provides an affordable means of gathering network performance and security metrics in high-rate 10G environments," said Adam Powers, CTO of Lancope. "Our flow-based approach not only eliminates costly monitoring of unused capacity, but also enables help desk, network operators and security analysts to detect, troubleshoot and manage network incidents all from a single solution."

ATLANTA AND LONDON (InfoSecurity Europe 2010), April 27, 2010-Lancope, Inc., the leader in NetFlowTM collection and analysis and the provider of the StealthWatch® System for flow-based network performance and security monitoring, today announced that it will demonstrate the Suspect Data Loss alarm in StealthWatch at Infosecurity Europe at Stand E24. Enhancing StealthWatch's ability to protect organizations against data leakage and improving end-to-end visibility across physical and virtual networks, the new alarm alerts organizations of potential data extrusions regardless of data format, protocol or encryption technique.
Recent studies show that the average organizational cost of a single data breach is close to $7M and rising(1). Recognizing that data loss prevention is a top priority for most organizations, Lancope developed the alarm, which detects anomalous data transfer from any point on the network to the Internet. Specifically, StealthWatch quickly identifies unusual network behavior indicative of data loss and provides details about the users involved, the amount of data transferred, the services used, how long the communications lasted and if it was a recurring event. StealthWatch is the only flow-based solution that reduces data loss and scales to monitor global networks for security, network performance, and virtual operations - all from a single platform.
The StealthWatch Suspect Data Loss alarm works with any data format or protocol, including unstructured data schemes commonly used to store employee identification numbers and private health information. Other data loss prevention tools require packet-level visibility to detect employee identification, credit card and social security numbers leaving the network. This requires the deployment of expensive probes throughout the network, as well as resource-intensive manual configuration and maintenance. Unlike traditional DLP tools, StealthWatch neither sits inline on the network nor requires probes. Rather, StealthWatch collects and analyzes flow telemetry to cost-effectively deliver visibility across physical and virtual networks. Extending visibility down to the user identity level, StealthWatch connects network activity with individual user names, not just IP addresses, to significantly improve audit controls for regulatory compliance.
Offering organizations increased control of their networks, StealthWatch enables immediate mitigation actions when a breach is detected, from triggering a deeper analysis to blocking a specific transaction from completing to provide time for investigation. All baselines and blocking actions can be easily modified, including exceptions for traffic amount thresholds.
"Data loss prevention is top of mind for many organizations, especially when the costs associated with a breach continue to rise and regulators impose stiff penalties for losing customer records," said Adam Powers, CTO of Lancope. "Designed to complement Data Loss Prevention technologies, the Suspect Data Loss alarm uses NetFlow to detect suspicious uploads without requiring payload content analysis.
